IVF is a very helpful medical procedure that helps people with problems in fertility or even those who wish to have children through assisted reproductive technology. Here's how it generally works:
1. Stimulation: Usually, the woman undergoes hormone treatment to stimulate her ovaries to produce multiple eggs.
2. Egg retrieval: The eggs are then surgically retrieved from the ovaries of the woman through the use of a needle guided by ultrasound.
3. Fertilization: The retrieved eggs are fertilized in the laboratory with sperm from the woman's partner or donor. This could be done conventionally using IVF-where the sperm and eggs have been mixed, or by means of intracytoplasmic sperm injection, where a single sperm is literally injected into each egg.
4. Embryo culture: Fertilized eggs, now called embryos, would be monitored over several days for proper development.
5. Embryo Transfer: Select the embryos and place them into the womb of the woman through the cervix with the help of a thin catheter. It is performed after 3-5 days of fertilization.
6. Pregnancy: If the embryo implants in the lining of the uterus, pregnancy occurs. A pregnancy test is done approximately two weeks after the embryo transfer to see whether it was successful.
IVF can be a very complex and emotionally challenging process; however, it has helped many all around the world reach their goal of having a baby when conception either does not take place or is not successful.
